If you haven’t had your irrigation system winterized yet these are some steps you can go through to help ensure that your system is protected until a certified technician blows the water out and winterizes your system:
- Shut off the water at the point of connection to your irrigation system. This is either located in the house (basement or garage) or out in an underground box in the yard. If it is in the yard just pull the cover off and reach down and turn the water off.
- Once the water is shut off to the system turn the controller on and run the system through a normal or shortened cycle to push as much water through the system as possible.
- If you have any exposed (above ground) piping wrap old towels or blankets around the exposed pipe with duck tape. Hopefully after running the system without water being turned on there is no water in the exposed pipes but if there is the blankets and towels will act as insulation reducing the chance the exposed water will freeze.
- Make sure all water spickets are turned off all the way and the garden hoses are unhooked.
- Call Rosehill Gardens at 816 941-4777 with any questions regarding winterizing your system. We will have a technician get back to you as soon as possible.
There are no guarantees that going through these steps will completely protect you system. You will still need your system blown out by a certified irrigation technician but these steps will help prevent immediate freeze damage in most cases. Even once your system is blown out by a certified technician there are no guarantees that your system will be completely dry without risk of damage due to Winter freeze. Winter weather can be detrimental to any system but by doing your part to protect your system you can greatly minimize the risk of major freeze damage.
